Biography of Dr Cecil Stewart O.B.E.
- Depression and Tuberculosis in his youth.
He left Monaghan in his teens with just a few pounds in his pocket and started work life in Belfast, sweeping a garage forecourt.
When he was engaged to be married, the doctors told him that his fiancee’s days were numbered, after they diagnosed incurable cancer.
The banks said no to his idea of creating nursing homes, and there seemed to be no way to get his idea off the ground.
He lived under a death threat from paramilitaries for refusing to pay protection money to their organisations.
Experts predicted failure when the government reversed a policy relating to nursing homes and the banks withdrew finance during major expansion.
He went on to employ almost two thousand staff and received an OBE for his contribution to the caring profession and the Northern Ireland economy.
In recent years in Africa, he has preached to tens of thousands at single gatherings, held seminars for business, church and political leaders, addressed MP’s in the Ugandan Parliament and developed humanitarian projects.
